Common OTT Advertising Pitfalls

No CTA, no VO, poor targeting, ignoring device optimizations and uncreative ads. These are the five advertising mistakes to avoid that we’re talking about on today’s episode of What the Friction. So you’re advertising on OTT, you know, streaming platforms. But you have to avoid these five mistakes.

Mistake 1: No Call-to-Action (CTA)

You have to tell them with a call to action, that CTA, even a simple learn more that drives someone to your website will work.

Mistake 2: No Voiceover (VO)

If you don’t have a voiceover or VO, you’re missing an opportunity to tell a compelling story along with your visuals, and your ad won’t be fully accessible to those with visual or hearing impairments.

Mistake 3: Ignoring Device Optimization

If your ads aren’t optimized for all the potential devices, one can view streaming content on—phone, tablet, big screen—you’ll be delivering a clunky experience. Imagine a widescreen ad on a mobile phone screen. Not a great experience.

Mistake 4: Poor Targeting

You have to build a target audience. Your ad might be seen by a lot of people, but resonate with only a few. You need to be specific in your targeting and develop creative to match.

Mistake 5: Uncreative or Low-Quality Ads

Speaking of creative, you need to develop high-quality, engaging creative that aligns with the platform and your target audience. Remember, you’re competing for attention and a premium space.
